The Kingdom You Can’t Stop
by Jacob Hudgins
“He lived there two whole years…proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance”(Acts 28:30, 31).
In the book of Acts, Satan takes his best shot to derail God’s work and fails.
Satan attacks the church through external pressures. The Sanhedrin threatens, then beats the apostles—yet “they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus”(Acts 5:42). They stone Stephen and begin a great persecution—yet “those who were scattered went about preaching the word”(Acts 8:4). Herod kills James and arrests Peter—yet Herod ends up eaten by worms and “the word of God increased and multiplied”(Acts 12:24). Christians are spoken against everywhere (Acts 28:22), accused of promoting another king to rival Caesar (Acts 17:7) and turning the world upside down (Acts 17:6). Paul is wrongfully arrested and transported in custody to Caesar—yet he keeps teaching about Jesus “with all boldness and without hindrance”(Acts 28:31).
Satan also attacks the church through internal problems. Ananias and Sapphira are revealed as hypocrites—yet “more than ever believers were added to the Lord”(Acts 5:14). There are accusations of racism and favoritism within the church—yet after the apostles correct the problem, “the word of God continued to increase, and the number of disciples multiplied greatly”(Acts 6:7). There is strong doctrinal disagreement about circumcision—yet after resolution by the apostles, they continue “teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also”(Acts 15:35).
Some are killed. Some are imprisoned. Some face riots and violence. Nothing stops God’s work.
Fast forward to today. What would stop it now? Do we have anything to fear from a culture that continues drifting ethically? Will science stop God’s work? Will governmental interference and oppression? Is popular opinion being against Jesus going to stop God?
The book of Acts teaches us to be confident in the power of God to accomplish his will no matter what. Nothing stops God’s work.
