Legacy

legacy typefaceAnd in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws”(Gen 26:4-5).

Abraham blessed the people around him. Lot had a better life because he was Abraham’s nephew. Not only did Abraham rescue him when captured (Gen 14:16) and ask God to spare Lot’s city if he found only 10 righteous (Gen 18:32), but Lot’s life was only spared because “God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow”(Gen 19:29). God remembered Abraham and saved Lot.

Ishmael had a better life because he was Abraham’s son. God told Abraham, “And I will make a nation of the son of the slave woman also, because he is your offspring”(Gen 21:13). God remembered Abraham and blessed Ishmael.

Isaac had a better life because he was Abraham’s son. After Abraham’s death, God promised Isaac, “I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws”(Gen 26:4-5). Abraham’s obedience led to Isaac’s blessing. God said further, “I am with you and will bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham’s sake”(Gen 26:24). God remembered Abraham and was with Isaac.

We could stretch the picture even farther. “In your offspring all nations of the earth shall be blessed” reaches down to us today. We are part of “all nations,” aren’t we? More, we are recipients of the Messiah who was son of Abraham. Without exaggeration, we can say that Abraham’s legacy reaches down to today.

None of this should be construed to say that each of these men (and all of us today) were right with God because of a relation to Abraham. Nor am I arguing that Abraham was such a good man and so impressed God that he is the pinnacle of right living. Rather, the point is that we are all leaving a legacy. Will my legacy of obedience and faith bless my family? Am I blessing those around me? My name may not be remembered in future generations, but will they share my faith?
