What Comes After Baptism
by Jacob Hudgins
“Even Simon himself believed, and after being baptized he continued with Philip. And seeing signs and great miracles performed, he was amazed”(Acts 8:13).
Philip continues to work with Simon. “Even Simon himself believed, and after being baptized he continued with Philip. And seeing signs and great miracles performed, he was amazed”(Acts 8:13). He follows Philip around, fascinated at the miracles he is performing and presumably learning from the teaching he is giving.
Reaching our potential is what we all desire to do. Whether it’s our potential in our careers, with our families, or spiritually, we want to be the best we can be. In order to do so, we must be willing to examine ourselves and seek out room to grow.
In Psalm 1, we have a blueprint on reaching our spiritual potential.
“and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things”(Eph 3:9).
When we renew acquaintances with an old friend, often we’ll ask: what have you been up to? Perhaps we know the broad details of their lives, but we are asking for what they are deeply passionate about and the goals they have been working toward. In this text, Paul is thrilled to be able to tell others what God has been hiding for centuries—what has previously been a “mystery”—just what it is God has been up to.
“Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is he who has been born king of the Jews?’”(Matt 2:1-2).
They are odd witnesses to Jesus’ birth. We do not know what nation they came from. They are merely “wise men from the east”—some kind of astronomers and perhaps magicians—who have come to honor Jesus. What can we learn from the wise men?
