As Obedient Children
by Jacob Hudgins
“As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance”(1 Pet 1:14)
Few things please parents as much as obedient children. For godly parents, this fact does not stem from a power trip but an earnest desire for the well-being of the child. Obedience ensures the child’s safety, the curtailing of bad habits, and the formation of character. So when Peter speaks of us (grown-ups!) making moral changes “as obedient children,” he is teaching us the spirit with which we serve God.
What causes God to break up a unified people? In Genesis 11, a group of people gather together, unified by one language and one goal. Their goal was simple: build a grandiose tower, and make a name for themselves. As they are building their tower, God decides to disperse them among the world, with different languages. While this story may just seem confusing, there are two lessons to learn from Babel.
When something big happens in our lives, we respond to it. Maybe it’s a diagnosis of illness. Maybe it’s a promotion at work. We may respond with anger or sadness, with joy or excitement. Reactions can be intense, or they can be subdued. So what happens when we see God in our life, answering prayers and caring for his people? Psalm 97 details God’s sovereignty and foundation for his reign, and begs the question: How do we respond to his authority?
Preachers struggle to consistently speak words that are simultaneously fresh, helpful, relevant, and scriptural. Yet inevitably the time comes when an important previously-taught truth must be repeated. Before you groan, consider some thoughts when you’ve heard the sermon before.
