Each Has His Own Gift from God
by Jacob Hudgins
“I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another”(1 Cor 7:7).
Paul is answering questions about marriage in this text and gives his advice that he thinks it is best to remain single. Yet he acknowledges that not everyone is capable of this and there is nothing wrong with marriage. Paul considers his singleness a gift. “But each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another”(1 Cor 7:7). This prompts two questions.
God knows everything about us, specifically Psalm 139 tells us this. God knew us in the womb and he knew us at every stage of our life. David points out the many ways God is present in our lives— and the necessity of being guided by God and knowing him. Because God created us, we have a response to make. We should strive to know God.
“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me…for my yoke is easy and my burden is light”(Matt 11:29-30)
Jesus gently calls us to him: “Come to me”. He longs for our allegiance, our submission, our trust. He promises great things to weary, life-worn man. In this thrilling passage, he calls to mind a struggling farm animal who needs only to find the right master to place upon him a lighter, better yoke. He tells us, “My yoke is easy”.
“As it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death”(Phil 1:20).
Did you notice “as always”? Paul hopes that “as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death”. Nothing had changed for Paul because he was in a tough spot under house arrest. He still honored Christ every day in everything he did and said. As always.
