The Fatted Calf
by Jacob Hudgins
“And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate”(Luke 15:23).
The boy has left home, wasted his father’s money, and found himself in the pigpen. He is ready to return home and beg for a position as a servant. He has his speech ready: “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants”(Luke 15:18-19). But when he sees him, the father cuts him off and sends his servants scurrying: “Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate”(Luke 15:22-23). What grace!
Living in America you probably have had some guilt about how much wealth you have compared to the rest of the world. Passages like “For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God” (Luke 18:25) can make us feel uneasy about how difficult it is for us to get to heaven.
