Knowing that the devil has “schemes”(Eph 6:11) to attack and destroy us, Paul urges Christians to prepare for the battle with equipment from God. “Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace”(Eph 6:14-15). We fight Satan’s lies with truth, his moral attacks with the righteousness God has given us, and we are prepared for the battle by the very gospel that saves us. Since the gospel teaches us about sin and its high toll, we know the need we have to be ready.
“In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit”(Eph 6:16-18). Our faith and salvation protect us, reassuring us that God is real and that he will deliver us in times of need. The word of God prepares us to fight back against Satan. Paul concludes his letter by asking for the prayers of the Ephesians that he might continue to boldly preach (Eph 6:19-20).
While it is important to be aware of Satan’s power and cunning, we can never afford to be over-impressed with him. God is greater than Satan! He has given us what we need to win our daily (and ultimate) battles with Satan. What will we choose?
