Paul gives Titus some tips on what needs to be taught and emphasized with various groups. “But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine”(Titus 2:1). Sound (healthy) teaching addresses all the various age and gender groups in the congregation. Each verse has a nutshell picture of Paul’s vision for what they should be. “Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good”(Titus 2:2-3). The older generations teach the younger by both example and statement about what it means to live the faith.
The younger Christians follow their lead. “and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled”(Titus 2:4-6). Paul wants older women to teach younger women their roles in the home and younger men to focus on controlling themselves. Titus himself is a model by the way he lives (Titus 2:7-8).
What is notable to me here is that self-control is for everyone. Older men need it. Young women need it. Young men need it. I think we can safely infer that older women need it as well. Self-control is centered on restraint and discipline. I can tell myself no to evil things and say yes to good. This is essential for Christians of all ages.
