We are picking up with our readings in the book of Acts today. Paul is in Corinth and Jesus has reassured him in a vision that “no one will attack you to harm you”(Acts 18:10). In this section, Jesus keeps his word. “But when Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a united attack on Paul and brought him before the tribunal, saying, ‘This man is persuading people to worship God contrary to the law’”(Acts 18:12-13). This is what the Jews attempted to do in Thessalonica, bringing charges before the Roman officials and get Paul arrested.
Paul is (as always) ready to answer this charge, but he is interrupted before he can begin. “Gallio said to the Jews, ‘If it were a matter of wrongdoing or vicious crime, O Jews, I would have reason to accept your complaint. But since it is a matter of questions about words and names and your own law, see to it yourselves. I refuse to be a judge of these things.’ And he drove them from the tribunal”(Acts 18:14-16). The Jews have miscalculated by referring to their law. Gallio has no interest in this. He also does not have the intense interest in pleasing the Jews that other public officials seem to have (such as Felix and Festus). Paul is saved from a disastrous situation and is allowed to keep preaching. Jesus keeps his word.
It is easier to see Jesus’ faithfulness to his words while looking backward. For Paul, it probably doesn’t feel like “no one will attack you to harm you” when he is seized and brought to trial. Yet afterward, it is clear what has happened. In similar ways, we can look back to see Jesus providing for us materially, being with us through trials, and working in us to grow. Jesus keeps his word to us too.
------------- One Thing to Think About: In what ways have I seen Jesus keep his word in my life?
One Thing to Pray For: Deeper trust in Jesus and patience to wait for him
