Deeper Things

deep waterOur world tempts us to live superficially. Our culture offers us fast food, shallow relationships, and quick fixes. Even in spiritual things, we are encouraged to exchange gradual spiritual growth and organic community for five minute “devos” and dodgeball. The book of James is a hard sell in our culture. It invites us look at the deeper things of life—things of real value that require serious thought, intense commitment, and continual effort.

The Gospel Doesn’t Change

mountains with clouds at sunsetEvery good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change”(James 1:17).

Our age is addicted to change. Technology must update. Scientific knowledge must be current or it is worthless. One of the greatest insults in our time is to be called “outdated” or “old-fashioned.” So it will require a good deal of courage to base our lives, thinking, families, and moral choices on a book that is old. It is in the face of this dilemma that we need to be reminded: the gospel doesn’t change!

What Do We Practice?

walk the talk signOften as I enter into a spiritual discussion with someone, I ask them if they are a religious person. What I mean when I say that is: do you have a belief system that you practice? Have you ever heard someone use that term outside of a spiritual context? Sometimes people will say I watch my favorite football team “religiously.” That doesn’t mean that it has anything to do with God, but that it is their normal ritual or practice. When I ask someone if they are religious, what I want to know is: do you practice your faith in God?

Open to Reason

James teaches us that God’s wisdom is “open to reason.”
